Extraordinary Kindnesses - The Clown
My sister made my wedding dress
From a pattern that I selected
She instructed me to keep it always
In my wardrobe
Just like she did.
I have read about those
Who don their wedding dresses
On their wedding anniversaries
Every year
To ensure that they "keep their figures".
After eleven years of marriage
My husband and I separated
Never to reunite
I sold my wedding dress the next year
Through the local newspaper
A woman and her daughter
Arrived to inspect it
The mother bought it
For her daughter to wear at a debutante ball
And I was happy not only to
Receive some money for this useless dress
That had spent eleven years
Hangi

Extraordinary Kindnesses - The Faint
When I was pregnant with my third child Andrew
On a day that was hot
As our Australian summers are
I was in Target
With my three year old daughter Stacey
Walking beside me
And my two year old son Seth
In a pusher
I remember being in the perfume department
Of Target
The mixed scents were overwhelming
They made me nauseous
I had a pair of small, plastic sunglasses
For my daughter
Who kept asking for them to wear immediately
But I had to take them
Through the checkout first
So I had to keep on explaining this to her
Over and over again
I felt very sick at the checkout
It took me all my time to sign
The Visa slip
I sat on

Extraordinary Kindnesses - The Nurses
The young Chinese doctor
Was bald and very nervous
Around the female surgeon
Because he was working at the hospital
In order to pass his medical exams
His scalp always reminded me of a sweaty mushroom
I was scheduled to have an operation that day
So I was surprised when the Chinese doctor
Told me that I could eat breakfast
I queried this with him
But he impatiently told me to eat my meal
Because the operation had been postponed
So I did
Later the trolley came for me
The wheeled stretcher, if you will
With a couple of the jolly, friendly
Pleasant men who seem to be the
Standard type of trolley pushers
Jovial, kindly, chatty,

Judith's Christmas Chapter Four
Her man had many faults, but she stuck with him bravely. Loyalty was one of her many virtues. What other woman would tolerate a man who cared more about her children than herself? What other woman would stay with a man who might have killed her cherished and much protected baby daughter Serena by putting her out on a rug in the shade of a tree and failing to cover her with enough blankets on a warm day? She had often suspected that her man had done this to deliberately cause Serena to catch a cold, which would be the real reason why she had suffocated to death on that awful, awful night. Judith had talked about this worry with quite a f

Judith's Christmas Chapter Three
Even though Judith knew that she was a busy, creative woman whose main goal in life now was to help others and to produce her exquisite art which she sold for what she considered to be mere pence, she had an abundance of time at her disposal to spend in day dreaming, fantasising and plotting. Of course a healthy imagination was one of the benefits of being such a naturally talented artist, although she had only discovered that she was a genius at art by chance, a year ago, after the accident that had left her so cruelly disabled.
She had always been a fragile, dainty woman, despite her deceptively healthy and unfortunately sturdy, robust bo

Serena - her most treasured baby - with fine brown hair that would surely have turned to a pure blonde, had died of cot death when only eight months old, seven years ago. She felt the satisfying, motherly tears welling in her eyes so easily as they always did when she thought of Serena, as she did so regularly. It was a tragedy that had left her heart-broken. She would never recover from the death of Serena. Her life would be perfect now with her man and her son if Serena was still alive. Serena would have been a friend to her mother, giving her the constant love and sympathy that she so craved. Serena would have been beauti

Chapter One
Their voices were growing raised in her bedroom: her daughters were laughing at a silly joke that her man had made and even her young son had slipped down from his privileged position beside her on her luxurious white bed and was now sitting beside his father on the luscious white carpet that covered her bedroom floor. Nobody was paying any attention to her. This wasn't good enough. She was being neglected and she expected more from them than this. She eyed them coldly, with displeasure, from under her lowered eyelashes.
It was Christmas day and they were gathered tightly around the small heater; the only one in the cold co
