It scares him
It's too big
And yet he knows it's small
The responsibility is far too heavy
And yet his burden is only light
He could carry more
Or cast it off at will
Or could he?
He doesn't know
It worries him intensely
And yet not at all
He has time to spend on everything
Yet no time at all
His time is all taken
Used up by living
What to do?
He can't go on like this
He can't go back
He must follow the river
Drift in the current
Spinning and swirling
Sucked in by the foam
Tangled in the reeds
Yet floating free
Among the frog spawn
Wherever the water takes him
Let the river carry him
Homeward to the sea
Release all thoughts and surrender
Surrender all thoughts of swimming
The river is god
Floating the star stuff
The child lays back
Secure in the light of love
That battles him mercilessly on rocks
That soothes him with it's great voice
That sings him to sleep with lullabies
Unmask?
Lie back and let me love
Be free
As the river grows salty
And flows to the sea
Let the waves comfort you
Listen to the song
Of all those other mariners
Who battle the current
Expend their strength
In a war they cannot win
Ultimately they achieve nothing
But strife
Troubled at the immensity
They fail to see the minutiae
Damaged by the intensity
Of their experience
They cease to feel
The ever-enveloping love
The ceaseless, eternal love
Of the creator
For it's struggling
Blind, heedless craft
Who fail to see the signs
That in it's great love
It sends by bright messengers
While it's children
See only the glint on the water
And fail to look up
To see where the shining
Originates
They are sailing
Into the quicksand
While he floats
Trusting, in, love,
Heedless to the cries
Of "Swim, Fool
"You're drowning".

I like this a lot... it's like a story about someone who's so complex but can be explained in one word, "Human." I've always had a fascination with drowning, and I must admit I love the last two lines best, but the beginning is good too.

I've nearly drowned a handful of times in my life, and I have to admit, it's kind of peaceful until the panic sets in.
